Creating in COVID presents fifteen emerging and established artists based across North America, and a selection of their work created during the global pandemic. Through painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, textile, and mixed media, the works of art on view illustrate the inspiring and generative impulses of artists working today. They also address some of the central concerns of our world, including, the state of the environment, existing systems of power, race and equity, the ever-presence of the screen, and realities of life during COVID. Samantha Bittman (B. 1982, Chicago, IL) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Through her hand-loomed textiles, drawings, and installations, Bittman reinvigorates traditions of weaving and Op Art. Her large-scale, site-specific mural, Interlace, was exhibited across the main floor of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. A variation on the mural is planned for an upcoming exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art, New York. Bittman has recently held other solo and two-person exhibitions including at Transmitter Gallery, Brooklyn, Super Dutchess, New York, Ronchini Gallery, London, and Andrew Rafacz Gallery, Chicago. She received her B.F.A. in Textiles from Rhode Island School of Design and her M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Madeline Hollander (B. 1986, Los Angeles, CA) lives and works between Los Angeles and New York City. Hollander's work in performance, choreography, and dance is rooted in her interest in movement, whether as seen in daily life, human gesture, or natural systems. Madeline held her first solo exhibition at Bortolami Gallery, New York, earlier this year, which received lauded reviews in The New York Times, Artforum, and The Brooklyn Rail. She has also exhibited at art institutions such as The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, as part of the 2019 Whitney Biennial, and the Centre Pompidou Metz, France. As a choreographer, Hollander has collaborated with film director Jordan Peele as well as artist Urs Fischer. Donald Moffett (B. 1955, San Antonio, Texas) lives and works in New York, NY. Throughout his multi-decade career, Moffett has honed an inimitable approach to traditional oil painting often embedded with social critique, whether as related to the individual or body politic, or the environment. Moffett has held solo exhibitions in galleries and art museums around the country, including at Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX. A survey exhibition of Moffett’s work was held at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, TX, and traveled to the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, and The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA. Kristine Moran (B. 1974, Montreal, Quebec, Canada) lives and works in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. Moran’s paintings teeter on the edge of abstract and representational, and reveal the artist’s stories through contrasting color and undulating form. Moran has held numerous solo exhibitions at Daniel Faria Gallery, Toronto, and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York. She will have her first solo museum show in 2021 at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, Owen Sound. Dashiell Manley (B. 1983, Fontana, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Manley’s recent practice focuses on a singular technique of applying oil paint to canvas, resulting in an expressive and lyrical body of work which the artist refers to as “Elegy.” Manley has held solo exhibitions of his paintings including at Jessica Silverman Gallery, San Francisco, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, Stanford, CA, and The Fireplace Project, East Hampton, NY. Lavaughan Jenkins (B. 1976, Pensacola, FL) lives and works in Boston, MA. Through his expressive and dimensional figurative works, Jenkins forges a new path in oil painting. A recipient of the 2019 James and Audrey Foster Prize, Jenkins has held solo presentations at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, Area Code Art Fair / Shelter in Place Gallery, Boston, and Volta NYC / Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Boston. Matt Saunders (B. 1975, Tacoma, WA) lives and works between Cambridge, MA, New York, NY, and Berlin, Germany. Saunders is renowned for his experimentations with materials, time, and light, as well as for his multimedia practice spanning painting, printmaking, photography and animation. Saunders has held solo exhibitions at galleries and museums around the world, including at Marian Goodman Gallery, St. Louis Art Museum, Tate Liverpool, and Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. Saunders is currently Associate Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University. He completed his M.F.A in Painting and Printmaking at Yale University School of Art. Courtney Stock (B. 1987, Malden, MA) lives and works in Boston, MA. A through-line in Stock’s work, which traverses painting, sculpture, and craft, is an intuitive sourcing of and experimentation with material. Stock has exhibited at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, Fort Point Community Arts Gallery, Boston, and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kerala, India. She has participated in residency programs including the Inside / Out Art Museum, Beijing, China, and the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT. Stock earned a B.A. in Visual Arts from Bowdoin College, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from San Francisco Art Institute, and an M.F.A from Massachusetts College of Art & Design, where she is currently Assistant Professor in the Boston Low-Residency MFA program and an Academic Advisor. Julia Dault (B. 1977, Toronto, Canada) lives and works in Toronto. Known for her abstract sculptures and eye-catching, patterned paintings, Dault has a unique approach, which often involves a range of industrial tools, materials, and self-imposed rules. Dault has been the subject of solo exhibitions at galleries and art institutions around the world, including the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, The Power Plant, Toronto, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, and White Cube, London. Her work has been presented in the New Museum Triennial and the Gwangju Biennial, as well as in group exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans, the Perez Art Museum, Miami, the MCA Chicago, and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. Black Dog Press recently published Dault’s first monograph, featuring writings by Jason Farago, Julia Paoli, Nigel Prince, and Lydia Davis. Soo Sunny Park (B. 1975, Seoul, South Korea) lives and works in Hanover, New Hampshire, where she is a Professor of Studio Art at Dartmouth College. Park is widely recognized for her sculptural light installations, which have been exhibited at art institutions such as the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC, the Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, NH, the Sharjah Art Museum, UAE, and the New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT. Matthew Morrocco (B. 1989, Providence, RI) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Morrocco’s photo portrait series including Complicit, Orchid, and Mirror Portraits, explore topics of queer identity, visual representation, and photography in the Age of Social Media. Morrocco has participated in solo and group exhibitions at galleries and art spaces across the country, including Pioneer Works, Brooklyn, Crush Curatorial, New York, Gallerie Borgia, Denver, SPRING/BREAK Art Show, New York, and Williams College Art Museum, Williamstown, MA. Sonia Almeida (B. 1978, Lisbon, Portugal) lives and works in Boston, MA, where she is Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Brandeis University. Almeida’s distinctive practice, spanning painting, textile, drawing, and book making, visualizes recurring themes of communication, language, and time. Almeida has held solo exhibitions at galleries and art institutions such as Simone Subal Gallery, New York, The Approach Gallery, London, and the MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, MA. Her work will be presented in a forthcoming solo exhibition at the Museu Julio Pomar, Portugal, and in "All I want – Portuguese Women Artists from 1900 to 2020," which will travel to Palais des Beaux-Arts – BOZAR, Brussels; Centre de création contemporaine Olivier Debré, Tours; and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon. Amongst many awards and grants, Almeida was a 2017 recipient of the James and Audrey Foster Prize, which resulted in a presentation of her work at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston. Gabriel Sosa (B.1985, Miami, FL) lives and works in Boston, MA. An artist, educator, curator, and linguist, Sosa creates text-based drawings and installations, which often allude to the power of language or questions of American bureaucracy. He is currently a 2020 Now + There Accelerator Fellow, and recently began unveiling a series of billboards in neighborhoods of Boston, MA, including East Boston, Roslindale, Roxbury, and Dorchester. The project will continue until January 2021, and has received review in The Boston Globe and WBUR. In addition to his public works, Sosa has held solo exhibitions at A R E A, Boston, and the Tufts University Art Galleries, Medford, MA. Sara Jimenez (B. 1984, London, Ontario, Canada) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. A Filipinx-Canadian artist, Jimenez has an interdisciplinary practice in which she materializes such concepts as home, origin, memory, and artifact. Jimenez’s sculpture and installation have been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, the Pinto Art Museum, Philippines, El Museo del Barrio, New York, and the Bronx Museum, New York. Amongst many other art institutions, her performances have been held at The Dedalus Foundation, New York, The Noguchi Museum, New York, and The Glasshouse, CT. Thiago Rocha Pitta (B. 1980, Tiradentes, Brazil) lives and works in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Through compelling imagery in watercolor, photography, sculpture, and video, Rocha Pitta captures both the natural phenomena and the man-made intervention in the environment. Rocha Pitta’s solo exhibition “Opening Night” recently opened at the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
